Expolink Route 20 - Behind the project

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The Expolink in Dubai connects the Metro Red Line from the Airport to the new exhibition centre for the Dubai 2020 expo. The project was carried out in 2017 by JV ACCIONA, a Spanish contractor and GULERMAK, a Turkish contractor. Acciona previously worked on projects like Line 9 (Barcelona Metro), Brisbane Legacy Way, Quito Metro and Follo Line (Norway). These are projects with a hybrid reinforcement solution, a combination of steel fibre and cages.

Technical complexity

After many years of experience in precast segment reinforcement with a hybrid solution, Expolink is the first Acciona job site in which the segments are reinforced with a steel fibre only solution. The designer CH2M and the engineer responsible for the project (a joint venture between Parsons and Systra) accepted the fibre solution based on it’s Model Code performance.

The external face of the segments is covered with an epoxy resin coating to protect it against the carbonatation in a thickness of 400 microns. Alignment dowels to connect the rings between themselves, bolts and inserts to connect the segments between themselves in 1 ring have been used to fulfil the quality criteria of this job site. The use of a high-performance concrete class (C 50/60) was a must for this design.

It’s the first time that Acciona has used a combination of gaskets: anchored EPDM gaskets and hydrophilic ones. 2 components mortar for the backfilling of the lining in an EPB TBM and 2kg of micro polypropylene fibres for fire protection completed the technical answer to this challenging project.
